Nestled in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, this exceptional place covers 35 hectares of lush greenery, shaded paths and botanical treasures. Peaceful retreat, it embodies the harmony between nature, history and wine-growing heritage.

Designed in the 18th century and enhanced by botanist Louis-Bernard Fischer (who also designed Bordeaux’s Jardin Public), the park charms visitors with its romantic layout: winding paths, poetic water features, giant ferns, century-old trees and rare species.

At the entrance, two imposing twin plane trees, nearly 40 meters tall, stand proudly like guardians of the estate. A little further on, a Second Empire magnolia and an ancient yew tree silently recall the centuries of history that have shaped this place, where the first vines are said to have been planted.

But Cantemerle is also a refuge: blackbirds, owls, squirrels, foxes and deer find sanctuary in this wild setting offering visitors a peaceful immersion in biodiversity.

               Did you know?
The origins of the name «Cantemerle»

  Learn more

The name Cantemerle comes from the old French « Canta Merla », meaning “the blackbird sings.” In medieval times, these lands were filed with forests and wildlife where Lord Poncio, the estate’s owner, would hunt to the cheerful song of blackbirds. Therefore, we have launched a project that is particularly close to our hearts: the creation of a botanical collection, a living bridge between our century-old park and our vineyards.

Every year, we collect seeds from various local species (hornbeams, oaks, chestnut trees, wild plum trees, hawthorns and more) from the park’s paths, then send them to a nursery in Darwin, Bordeaux. These seeds turn into young trees and shrubs that we gradually replant across the vineyard.

Why these species? Because they are native, perfectly suited to our terroir, resilient to climate change and above all, welcoming to precious wildlife: birds, pollinating insects, bats which are all natural allies of the vine.

Our aim is to create, over the years, ecological corridors, living hedges that connect the different natural areas of the property.

               Did you know?
                      Facts & figures

  Learn more

– 160 species (flora and fauna combined), including 30 species of birds recorded
– 30 protected species, including 10 vulnerable or endangered species recorded
– 52% of nesting birds threatened in Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (Source: Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Biodiversity Agency)

Green pathways:
Where nature and
vineyard meet

At Château Cantemerle, we believe that vines thrive best within a living, balanced ecosystem. That’s why we have been developing for several years ecological corridors, hedgerows that connect Cantemerles’ natural spaces and interact harmoniously with the vineyard.

These corridors also capture carbon, fight soil erosion and facilitate water flow into the soil, ensuring the vines remain nourished during dry conditions.

They serve as vital refuges for biodiversity. Birds, insects, bats find shelter, food and breeding grounds within these green corridors. This biodiversity provides valuable natural regulation, limiting damage from vineyard pests and reducing our reliance on plant protection treatments. Moreover, in summer, these hedges create small pockets of coolness, much appreciated by our teams!

Along the streams, we are also establishing what we call “vegetal vaults”: hedges planted on either side of the watercourse to provide shade which limits direct sunlight on the stream bed and reduces excessive growth of algae and aquatic plants. To preserve this precious resource, we have chosen to collaborate with local stakeholders to identify the best actions to take on our estate.

Two major projects are currently underway to restore and enhance the aquatic environments on our lands:

RESTORING THE MOULINE’S NATURAL FLOW – The Mouline, a small classified stream running through our estate, had been diverted from its natural course at the expense of its banks and biodiversity. We are now restoring its natural meanders which slows the water flow, reduces the risk of flooding and improves water quality. Along the banks, alder and willow develop freely, stabilizing the shores in a sustainable way.

CREATING A NEW WETLAND – On the estate, a former water retention area is being transformed into a wetland.
